African Music: Baaba Maal / Playing for Change
June 14, 7:00PM to 10:00PM
World-renowned singer/songwriter Baaba Maal (pictured) is widely acknowledged as one of Africa‘s most prolific and beloved musicians. Maal‘s distinctive palette, which fuses traditional African rhythm and song structure with elements of Western pop and R&B, first gained American attention with the seminal 1989 album Djam Leelii. Maal has since released over fifteen full-length recordings and engaged in a host of humanitarian concerns, including his work as a UN Youth Emissary. Maal‘s most recent LP, 2009‘s Television, offers a unique amalgam of electronic dance and global influences.
Utilizing innovative mobile audio/video techniques, Playing for Change is the brainchild of Grammy-winning producer/engineer Mark Johnson. He records musicians in myriad outdoor environments; beneath urban streetlights, in public parks, in doorways, on cobblestone streets, amid hilly pueblos and combines the tracks into unique new collaborations between artists that may have never met in person. Already the project has traveled from post-Katrina New Orleans to post-apartheid South Africa, from the remote beauty of the Himalayas to the religiously diverse Jerusalem, all while illustrating the power of music to transcend cultural and geographic boundaries. Select musicians from the project will come from different parts of the globe to perform together.

Tony Allen, Legendary Nigerian Drummer
June 17, 12:00PM
As a member of Fela Kuti’s indispensable group Africa 70 (founded in the early 70s), legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen created the pulse of Afrobeat and, with it, an entire genre. Reared on both the buoyant sounds of Ghanaian highlife and American jazz, Allen played with Fela for 15 years before setting off on a successful career as a solo artist, which solidified his reputation as the master of the understated polyrhythmic groove.

The Het Heru Healing Theatre
On Saturday June 12th, at 8:00pm, the Ausar Auset Society, located at 626 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, will host a Het Heru Healing Theater presentation – “THE ROSE FLYER: Peace, Pleasure or Pain” which traces women’s journeys through relationships and life.
This dramatic presentation, flavored with dance and comedy, brings into focus the emotions - anger, grief, sorrow, fear, disappointment and unfulfilled expectations – that tangle women’s lives and deplete their life force. It invites the audience to embark on a journey of relaxation and healing, and to bathe joyfully in Het Heru’s rejuvenating waters, washing away all tension that prevents us from realizing our goals.
Stay and enjoy the after party!
Meet the play’s artistic director, Queen Mother Maasht Amm Amen, creator of the Het Heru Healing Dance and accompanying DVD, founder of the Het Heru Healing Circle system, counselor, workshop facilitator, entrepreneur, anti-aging advocate, and author of Het Heru Healing Dance: 11 Movements to Peace and Inner Joy.
“THE ROSE FLYER: Peace, Pleasure or Pain” features the Het Heru Healing Dance which transports women of all ages to an inner oasis where they can connect with the knowledge that they are beautiful, peaceful, beings, who have the power to nourish and balance their spiritual, mental, physical and emotional health. Since the Dance’s inception, in 1997, thousands of women in the USA and abroad have used the Het Heru Healing Dance to promote rejuvenation and relaxation and have witnessed dramatic improvement in their dispositions, relationships and health.
Admission is $20.00 in advance - $25.00 at the door
Directions: Take the Shuttle, Q or B train to Prospect Park or the B41 bus to Fenimore Street and Flatbush Ave.
